2015 Legislative Update For Week Ending October 31 2015

For more sample town hall questions, read this month's Legislative Update HERE. .Many expected immigration reform to be a focal point of the President's speech, however, his remarks on the topic were vague and very brief. In one short paragraph, he said, "Republicans and Democrats in the Senate have acted. I know that members of both parties in the House want to do the same … So let's get immigration reform done this year." TSCL has some serious concerns about comprehensive immigration reform, since it would further strain the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds. We strongly feel that any efforts to reform the system should include loophole-closing legislation that would prevent immigrants from receiving benefits based on a history of illegal work. .TSCL was pleased to see support grow for H.R. 1795 and H.R. 2305 this week, and we look forward to helping build additional support for them in the coming months. … Continued
2017 Loss of Buying Power Report .Alexandria, VEighty-nine percent of people responding to a new poll by The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) are opposed to President Obama's executive action on immigration. The poll was conducted prior to the president's announcement of executive action that would allow an estimated 4.9 million unauthorized immigrants to avoid deportation. It asked, "Should President Obama bypass Congress to halt deportations of illegal immigrants?" Only 11 percent of those responding said "yes." .Eight Ways to Lower Your Prescription Costs .A deductible is the amount of money you must pay before your coverage starts. Many Medicare supplements (Medigap policies), Medicare Advantage plans, and drug plans cover Medicare's deductible as part of the coverage you purchase. Medigap polices "B" through "J" pay the Part A dedictible, and Plans "C", "F" and "J" also cover the Part B deductible. Medicare Advantage Plans and prescription drug plans may or may not have a yearly deductible depending on the type of plan you choose. There are also federal and state government programs for low-income seniors that provide assistance for this cost. .Lawmakers at Wednesday's hearing seemed encouraged by Mr. Brune's testimony, but agreed with Mr. Bagdoyan that more work remains. Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (TX-3) said, "We need to make sure fraudsters don't continue to benefit at the expense of hardworking taxpayers … I'm committed to working with Social Security and all of my colleagues to make sure the agency has all the tools to stop fraud." Ranking Member of the Subcommittee John Larson (CT-1) agreed with Chairman Johnson and emphasized the need for adequate staffing and funding for SSA in the years ahead. Administrative budget cuts and hiring freezes are currently impeding progress. .Irene is the first to say she wouldn't know where to begin when it comes to figuring out the best deal for her drug coverage. To accomplish this she gets unbiased advice and counseling. Her neighbor, Mary Johnson, is a Medicare policy analyst for The Senior Citizens League (TSCL).
